GUGUMUKIRA MU KAZO

GUGUMUKIRA MU KAZO

Gugumukira Mu Kazo is an annual event that takes over the public roads of Kampala for a community fashion show. Its a loud celebration of the contribution local tailors provide to society and their communities. Staged on the vibrant roads of Kazo, amongst cows, cars, and street chaos, the event challenges the uniform idea of what a runway looks like. The final performance, the 'boda-runway' (models using 'boda-bodas' (motorcycles) in the final catwalk) opposes everything that we typically think of a runway, retorting at the inequalities and exclusionary nature of the global fashion industry in the process.

Gugumukira Mu Kazo reclaims the streets as a space of personal expression and cultural pride. Showcasing local designers and students of the Fashion Cyphers, the event democratises fashion, inspires a new generation of designers and creatives and proves that fashion is an accessible and reputable vocation.
